BIRT is a free open-source "technology platform to create data visualizations and reports that can be embedded into rich client and web applications, especially those based on Java and Java EE."[2]

Product history

The Actuate Corporation joined the Eclipse Foundation — an independent non-profit corporation stewarding the Eclipse open-source software community — on August 24, 2004, proposing and sponsoring the development of the BIRT project, "the first top-level Eclipse project for the development of applications that include business intelligence and enterprise reporting functionality."[3] On October 6, 2004, the Eclipse Foundation approved the project, making it a top-level program.[4] Actuate had begun development earlier in 2004 but released the project to Eclipse upon approval, continuing to act as steward and roadmap developer for the project.[4]

In early 2005, a GitHub project was started, with the first commit appearing on February 3.[5] On June 1, 2005, the first stable open-source build of BIRT was created for the public.[1] Development on the project has been steady since.

In May 2014, Actuate announced via a press release "the number of developers using BIRT worldwide has grown to 3.5 million, an increase of 500,000 in just six months, based on quarterly surveys conducted by an independent, global, developer research firm."[6]
