XOOPS is free open-source content management software. "XOOPS" stands for eXtensible Object Oriented Portal System.[2]

Product history

XOOPS was started by developer Kazumi Ono in 2001[2], with a SourceForge project started on December 6 of that year.[3] After a series of betas and release candidates, the first stable release of XOOPS arrived on December 5, 2002 as version 1.3.6.[1] XOOPS 1.x was originally based off of PHPNuke 4.4.1 and MyPHPNuke 1.8.5, and the team claimed to have created one of the first open-source applications based on object-oriented programming.[2]

In late 2009, the XOOPS Community announced an internal disagreement between itself and the former project manager Herko Coomans, claiming the financial decisions Coomans was making (under the entity Stichting XOOPS) — as well as other activity from other members — was disrupting the functioning of the project. Additional claims were made about withholding the domain name and nearly €15,000 from the Community, and a suit was filed against Coomans.[4] The Dutch Court rejected the suit in April 2010, dismissing claims "of a legal commitment from Stichting XOOPS to Xoops Foundation LLC."[5][6]

Awards and recognition

XOOPS won the OSSContest Award for "excellence in creative application" in 2008[7], and it won the grand prize in the International category of OSS Challenge 2009.[8]

XOOPS won Best Technology Award at the North East Asia OSS Forum in November 2010.[9]

XOOPS won Project of the Month honors from SourceForge in August 2012.[10]

Hardware/software requirements

For 2.5.2: The 2.5.2 installation guide (PDF) states "the Apache web server; the database manager MySQL; scripting language PHP." However, on page 9 it further clarifies:

  • WWW server (Apache, IIS, Roxen, etc.)
  • PHP 5.2 or higher
  • MySQL 5.1 or higher

For 2.5.7.x and 2.5.8:

  • Apache, IIS, Roxen or other compatible web servers
  • PHP 5.3.7 or higher
  • MySQL 5.1 or higher (5.5 recommended)
