The National Agribusiness Technology Center (NATC, or sometimes TNATC) is a non-profit corporation "dedicated to the identification of 'cutting edge' technologies and committed to assisting in their application in the American farm community."[1] NATC also makes the license to its AgraGuard software suite freely available to public sector agencies, though the recipient agency remains responsible for their own costs related to hardware and software infrastructure, including customization costs.[2]

History

The NATC was officially set up in 2008 "with the intent to research, analyze, filter, and distribute information regarding agricultural technology."[3]

Software

In the mid-2000s, IT services firm and developer Computer Aid, Inc. developed animal population, laboratory, and plant software for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) via contract.[4][5] The State of Pennsylvania eventually donated that software to the NATC, which today provides a free license of the software under the integrated AgraGuard platform to state and local governments[6][7], with Computer Aid working with the NATC as a software implementer of its originally developed software offerings.[6][8]

Technology and products

AgraGuard

AgraGuard is a suite of Microsoft-based applications for agriculture departments and agencies in the U.S. The software license to AgraGuard is freely available to public sector agencies, though the recipient agency remains responsible for their own costs related to hardware and software infrastructure, including customization costs.[2]

It consists of the following components:

  • USAHerds, an enterprise application designed to help departments and agencies "manage and monitor animal health within their jurisdiction; report test results to USDA’s Veterinary Services (VS); and prevent, control, eradicate, and recover from disease and all hazard incidents at the local level."[2]
  • USAPlants, an enterprise application designed to help with "managing licenses, certificates, course work, laboratory testing, and other aspects of the plant industry."
  • USAMeals, "a web-based application used to perform food and funding allocations for multiple programs such as the National School Lunch Program"
  • USADogs and USAPets, applications for handling kennel licensing and emergency pet tracking
