ownCloud is open-source file syncing and sharing software. The primary version is a free Community edition, though related company ownCloud, Inc. offers a fee-based commercial Business and Enterprise edition.
Product history
ownCloud was started by German developer Frank Karlitschek, born from a keynote speech he gave in San Diego, California in January 2010 (as well as previous discussions with other developers and tech-minded people) about "the need of a self-controlled free and open-source cloud."[2][3] An open-source Gitorious project was started by Karlitschek on January 10, 2010[4], and a beta of version 1.0 arrived there a few months later.[5]. Version 1.0 of ownCloud was released on June 24, 2010.[1] Steady work continued on the project, and by late 2011, plans were underway to raise investment capital for an extended business enterprise model of the ownCloud software under a new entity ownCloud, Inc. $820,000 were raised in a first effort in December 2011.[6]
