The use of an ad hoc procedure provides the ability to step outside an established pattern to accomplish a particular task. Using ad hoc processes, while often convenient and necessary, sometimes circumvents intended safeguards. It is a good practice to consider any wider implications of performing a task ad hoc before stepping outside an established pattern (SOP) which may automatically provide important integrated steps or appropriate constraints.
