OpenX Source was open-source advertisement server software. The open-source version of the software was sold on September 13, 2013 and is now being developed (as open-source) as Revive Adserver.[2] Proprietary commercial versions of OpenX are still marketed by OpenX Technologies.
Product history
OpenX began as phpAds, created by Tobias Ratschiller in early 1999.[3][4][5] However, by 2000 Ratschiller didn't have the time to support the phpAds project, and programmer Wim Godden decided to fork the project as phpAdsNew, expanding the project with new features in the process.[5][4][6] Godden and programmer Niels Leenheer — who joined the team in January 2001 — hoped the "New" moniker would be temporary, lasting only until Ratschiller could update the phpAds website. Unfortunately, this only happened years later, after the name phpAdsNew was too well established to be changed.[5]
During the time period between 2001 and 2002, new features new features were added and existing ones improved. After the release of version 1.9, a completely revised version 2.0 was finally released on September 29, 2004, led by Niels Leenheer.[5] Developer Scott Switzer began working on the project then, with hopes of updating the content for a version 2.1 release. This, however, didn't happen; rather, the code ended up being modified for employer Unanimus and released as "MaxMediaManager."[5] The software was taken back to the open source community eventually, culminating in phpAdsNew, phpPgAds and MaxMediaManager becoming "OpenAds" in late 2006. phpAdsNew became OpenAds version 2.0 and MaxMediaManager transitioned to version 2.3.[7][5]
When version 2.4.4 was released on February 21, 2008, OpenAds was once again rebranded under a new name: OpenX.[1]
In 2011, OpenX Software disabled direct downloads of the free open-source version. Former developer Wim Godden (2000–2002) subsequently made all GPL versions from phpAds 1.2.0 to OpenX 2.8.9 (released on May 9, 2012.[8]) available.[9] Later, downloads of OpenX Source were re-enabled, though only for the latest version.[10] On September 13, 2013, OpenX Technologies announced the sale of its legacy open-source ad serving product, OpenX Source, to a team led by Andrew Hill, one of the code's original developers. The team is developing the open-source project under the new name Revive Adserver.[2]
