dotProject is free web-based open-source project management software.
Product history
dotProject has its origins as a project started by and maintained by the entity dotMarketing.org in 2000.[2][2] An open-source SourceForge project was started for the software on February 28, 2001.[3] Initial development was a bit slow, potentially hindered by dotCMS, a web-based content management system being developed at around the same time. A stable version 1.0 release finally arrived on September 1, 2003.[1]
On January 12, 2004, project lead Adam Donnison announced long-time contributor Andrew Eddie would be moving off the project to pursue an opportunity developing the open-source Mambo content management system.[4] Despite the loss, work continued on the project, and version 2.0 of dotProject was released on March 31, 2005.[5]
In December 2007, a change to the Zend Framework was announced for a future version 3.0, though no timeframe was put on getting to 3.0.[6] The project was again promoted anew in an attempt to get closer to version 3.0. Those efforts in part were responsible for the flurry of activity that brought a Project of the Month award to dotProject in April 2009.[7] The next month, a clarification was made about the status of the move to version 3.0, with recognition of the slow timeline and the intent of potentially working more features into version 2.x first.[8] Since then several 2.x releases have occurred, but it remains unclear if a revised Zend-based version 3.0 will arrive.
