FORMULATOR was originally developed by ColorTec Associates — a developer of "color QC, color mixing, and laboratory applications" — in 2002. A separate company, FORMULATOR Software, was created in 2005 to further develop the product.^[1]

FORMULATOR is an electronic laboratory notebook "for the formulation chemist, food technologist and regulatory agent."^[2] The software's base functionality is represented as the "chemical" version. Additional modules may be added to the software to give it extended functionality for researchers in the cosmetic, nutritional, and pharmaceutical industries. A "Plus" version of the software exists, though it's not clear what is included.
