PrestaShop is a free open-source eCommerce and content management application most often used to create and manage online storefronts.

Product history

PrestaShop originated as the graduation project of Bruno Lévêque at French computer engineering school EPITA. With the help of five other developers, two merchants, and Igor Schlumberger — then CEO of LeGuide.com, where Lévêque was employed — the project began to develop, with over 3000 hours of work going into the project in the course of a couple of years.^[2] In early 2007 Lévêque and Schlumberger decided to work together to release PrestaShop as free open-source software and created the entity PrestaShop SA to better organize the project. The open-source model was chosen because it "provided better information sharing, a superior response to proprietary software, and a force for constant innovation."^[2]

A stable version 1.0 of the software was finally released on August 1, 2008 after a dozen previous beta releases.^[1] Steady development has continued on the software since, with the latest release arriving on August 28, 2013 as version 1.5.5.^[3]

Nominations and awards

In September 2009, PrestaShop was nominated among 19 other innovative startups for the Open Innovation Awards, presented at the 2009 Open World Forum in Paris.^[4]^[5]

In December 2009, PrestaShop was ranked seventh among the top 10 open source eCommerce programs by ecommerce-guide.com, noting it "jumped the highest in rank order, leaping five positions from 12th to 7th"^[6] compared to the previous year.

PrestaShop won the Packt Publishing Open Source Awards 2010 prize for "Open Source E-Commerce Applications."^[7]

PrestaShop won the Packt Publishing Open Source Awards 2011 prize for "Open Source Business Applications."^[8]
