DokuWiki is a free open-source wiki application designed to meet small companies' documentation needs. DokuWiki stores all pages on plain text files and thus needs no database.[2] Its syntax is similar to the one used by MediaWiki.

Product history

DokuWiki was started by Andreas Gohr in June 2004.[3] On July 4 the first official release was published on Freshmeat (now known as Freecode).[4]

A big step in the development was the re-design of the parser and the renderer for the May 7, 2005 release.[5] The new design was a big performance improvement and made DokuWiki usable for bigger documentation projects. It also prepared DokuWiki for an introduction of a generic plug-in interface which simplified the development and maintenance of add-ons. The awareness level of DokuWiki increased with the introduction of DokuWiki in the Linux distributions Debian in April 2005[6] and Gentoo Linux in July 2005.[7]

Releases were limited in 2010 and 2011, with only one each year; however, both were considered to be major releases with several new features, including jQuery support.[8]
