Liferay Portal is an open-source content management system and enterprise portal often used to power corporate intranets and extranets. It is available in a free open-source version as Liferay Portal Community Edition and a commercial proprietary version as Liferay Portal Enterprise Edition.
Liferay Portal allows users to set up features common to websites. It is fundamentally constructed of functional units called "portlets."[3] Liferay is sometimes described as a content management framework or a web application framework. Liferay's support for plugins extends into multiple programming languages, including support for PHP and Ruby portlets.[4]
Liferay Portal is Java based and runs on any computing platform capable of running the Java Runtime Environment and an application server. Liferay is available bundled with a servlet container such as Apache Tomcat.[5]
Product history
Liferay was started in 2000 by chief software architect Brian Chan after being asked to create a website for his church by its pastor.[6] A project page for Liferay was created on SourceForge on March 18, 2002[7], followed by a first official release with version 1.7.5 in October of the same year.[1][2] Seeing a true demand for the offering, Liferay, Inc. was formed and incorporated in 2004.[8]
The company's Enterprise Edition has been acknowledged by several notable organizations. It was recognized by EContent magazine in its "EContent 100" list of industry leaders[9][10] and in 2007, InfoWorld named it a "Technology of the Year."[11] In July 2007, Liferay announced a partnership with ICEsoft Technologies, provider of the ICEfaces library, for developing Ajax technology for their enterprise portal software.[12]
In January 2008, the company hired the lead engineer for jQuery UI, to exclusively work full-time on the JavaScript library.[13]
Liferay 6.1 was released in Fall 2011 and saw several improvements and new functionality[14] including an improved document library, dynamic data lists, and an app store.
