The field sample identifier, as defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency via its SEDD Specification Version 5.2, is a "sampler-defined identifier assigned to a sample. This identifier is not assigned by the client." The EPA adds that "this value is often not known to the laboratory. It could be useful as a link into the sampling records system."[1]
