Researcher and programmer Patrick R. Michaud began work on PmWiki in 2001, as he needed "to build and maintain web sites for the various projects and groups [he] was involved in,"<ref name="PmStart1" /> with a release of version 0.1 in September. When the implementation didn't quite work out as planned, he created the idea of "WikiGroups" "as a way for people (non-admins) to create their own spaces for wiki content without having to seek out or become an administrator to do it."<ref name="PmStart1" /> WikiGroups were first incorporated into the software in January 2002.<ref name="EarlyHist1" /> Use of the software spread around the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi campus that spring.<ref name="EarlyHist1" />
