Joomla was the result of a fork of content management system Mambo on August 17, 2005. Just before the fork was created, the Mambo name was trademarked by Miro International Pvt Ltd., who formed a non-profit foundation with the stated purpose of funding the project and protecting it from lawsuits.<ref>{{cite web |archiveurl=http://web.archive.org/web/20100824063246/http://about.mambo-foundation.org/index.php/announcing-launch-of-new-mambo-foundation |url=http://about.mambo-foundation.org/index.php/announcing-launch-of-new-mambo-foundation |title=Announcing Launch of New Mambo Foundation |publisher=Mambo Foundation, Inc |archivedate=24 August 2010 |date=11 August 2005 |accessdate=3 April 2012}}</ref> The Joomla development team claimed that many of the provisions of the foundation structure went against previous agreements made by the elected Mambo Steering Committee, lacked the necessary consultation with key stakeholders, and included provisions that violated core open-source values.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?t=73 |title=Mambo Open Source Development Team - Letter to the community - Discussion |author=Baker, Brad |publisher=Open Source Matters, Inc |date=17 August 2005 |accessdate=3 April 2012}}</ref>

The Joomla development team created a website called OpenSourceMatters.org to distribute information to users, developers, web designers and the community in general. Project leader Andrew Eddie wrote a letter<ref>{{cite web |url=http://forum.mamboserver.com/showthread.php?t=57645 |title=Mambo Open Source Development Team - Letter to the community |author=Eddie, Andrew |publisher=Mambo Communities Pty Ltd |date=17 August 2005 |accessdate=3 April 2012}}</ref> that appeared on the announcements section of the public forum at mamboserver.com. A little more than one thousand people had joined OpenSourceMatters.org within a day, most posting words of encouragement and support. Miro CEO Peter Lamont gave a public response to the development team in the form of responses to twenty questions asked by author and open-source enthusiast Ric Shreves. Shreves posted the responses in an article titled "The Mambo Open Source Controversy — 20 Questions With Miro".<ref name="Shreves">{{cite web |archiveurl=http://web.archive.org/web/20051018062644/http://ricshreves.net/content/view/116/47/ |url=http://ricshreves.net/content/view/116/47/ |title=The Mambo Open Source Controversy - 20 Questions With Miro |author=Shreves, Ric |publisher=Ric Shreves |archivedate=18 October 2005 |date=21 August 2005 |accessdate=3 April 2012}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=3037 |title=The Mambo Open Source Controversy — 20 Questions With Miro |author="apek" |publisher=Open Source Matters, Inc |date=1 September 2005 |accessdate=3 April 2012}}</ref> This event created controversy within the free software community about the definition of "open source." Forums at many other open source projects were active with postings for and against the actions of both sides.

In the two weeks following Eddie's announcement, teams were re-organized, and the community continued to grow. Eben Moglen and the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) assisted the Joomla core team beginning in August 2005, as indicated by Moglen's blog entry from that date and a related OSM announcement.<ref name="MoglenAug05">{{cite web |url=http://emoglen.law.columbia.edu/blog/2005/08/index.html |title=Why I like Open Source Matters (was Why I Like Mambo) |author=Moglen, Eben |publisher=Eben Moglen |date=22 August 2005 |accessdate=3 April 2012}}</ref><ref name="OSM2005">{{cite web |url=http://www.joomla.org/announcements/general-news/35-new-arrival.html |title=Award-winning Development Team Welcomes New Arrival — Joomla! |author=Russell, Peter |publisher=Open Source Matters, Inc |date=1 September 2005 |accessdate=3 April 2012}}</ref> Less than a month after the fork, version 1.0 of Joomla was released to the public.<ref name="Joomla1.0" />

Joomla went on to win the Packt Publishing Open Source Content Management System Award in 2006, 2007, and 2011.<ref name="packtpub-award">{{cite web |url=http://www.packtpub.com/article/open-source-content-management-system-award-winner-announced |title=2006 Open Source Content Management System Award Winner Announced |publisher=Packt Publishing |date=14 November 2006 |accessdate=3 April 2012}}</ref><ref name="packtpub-award2">{{cite web |url=http://www.packtpub.com/article/joomla-wins-best-php-open-source-content-management-system |title=Joomla!
